Scrapping a SORN Car in Portsmouth

A SORN car can still be assessed for a scrap or salvage quote. The practical questions are where it is stored, whether it can be loaded and who can authorise the handover. SORN describes the vehicle’s off-road status; it does not tell a collector whether the engine runs, the brakes are free or a garage entrance is wide enough.

Get a quote for your Portsmouth SORN car using the form on our homepage. Continue on ScrapTrak to confirm the vehicle, condition and contact details. For an access or documentation question, call 023 9355 2546. A quote request does not reserve a collection slot.

Keep storage and transport separate

Under GOV.UK’s SORN guidance, an off-road vehicle is not kept or used on a public road. A garage, driveway or private land can be suitable storage. A Portsmouth resident parking permit does not turn a public-road bay into private storage. Check the actual location before making arrangements.

The public-road driving exception is a journey to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. It does not cover driving to a scrapyard because you have arranged a sale. A collection booking also does not create that exception. Explain that the vehicle is SORN so a suitable transport approach can be agreed.

What if it has been standing for months?

Describe what you already know without attempting a repair just to obtain a quote. Long storage can leave the collector with questions that the registration alone cannot answer. Note whether the wheels turn, tyres are inflated, keys are present and steering can move. Mention removed parts, visible damage or a car blocked behind other items.

If the car is in a garage, provide the door location, approach and any known access limits. For a shared driveway in Cosham, Paulsgrove or Drayton, explain whose vehicles might block the exit and who can arrange access. Read the non-runner collection guide and difficult-access guide where those problems apply.

Agree the transaction before it leaves

Confirm the buyer’s identity, intended route for the vehicle, amount payable, any charges and collection appointment. A SORN car may be assessed differently according to its condition and completeness; its off-road status alone is not a valuation. Our price guide explains how to compare the terms of an offer.

Have the available V5C, keys and agreed identification ready. If you are acting for a relative or an estate, explain your authority before handover. If the logbook is missing, raise that at the start rather than leaving the documentation question for the collection day.

Notify DVLA when the car changes hands

SORN ends automatically when a vehicle is sold or scrapped, but you must still complete the relevant DVLA notification. Follow DVLA’s transfer instructions and retain the recipient’s details and handover date. Without a V5C, the instructions require written notification with the specified vehicle and transaction details.

A tax refund, if any, is a separate DVLA matter. You may already have received one when SORN began; do not assume the buyer’s offer includes a further refund. Check GOV.UK’s tax refund guidance, and deal with your insurer about your policy separately.

Our paperwork guide covers the records to keep, while the collection checklist helps prepare for the agreed appointment across Portsmouth and PO1–PO6.

Work through the storage position before cancelling plans

If the car is already on a private driveway or in a garage, establish that it can remain there until the agreed collection. If a move, house sale or garage deadline is approaching, explain that date when discussing the enquiry. A pending quote does not extend permission to use someone else’s land or resolve a public-road storage problem.

For a vehicle in a Portsmouth resident bay, check its status and actual location promptly. Do not treat an unused car on the street as off-road simply because you no longer drive it. If you need advice about its road status, use the linked official guidance and DVLA services; the collection enquiry is a separate process.

Three examples of a SORN handover

A car stored in a home garage

Give the full postcode, garage entrance and known condition. Say if the vehicle has not moved for a long period and whether the keys are available. Clear personal items from the approach where you can safely do so, but do not attempt to start or push the car simply to confirm it will move. The collection checklist helps prepare the agreed appointment.

A car left at a repair garage

If a garage in Hilsea or Cosham has the car, use that location for the quote. Agree authority to release it, the available documents and the person who will attend. Check any release or storage arrangements directly with the garage. Read the garage handover guide before booking.

A vehicle passed to a family member

Changing keeper and moving the car are separate steps. Establish who owns it and can authorise disposal, and explain any recent transfer to the quote provider. GOV.UK states that a previous keeper’s SORN cannot be transferred to the new keeper. Check the official requirements for the actual change rather than assuming an old declaration covers the new arrangement.

Keep a short record of the dates

Record the collection agreement, actual handover date, recipient’s name and address, and the DVLA confirmation. If an appointment changes, the date of the booking is not the date the vehicle left your possession. Keep the receipt and relevant messages together so you can identify what actually happened.

If the car changes location between quote and collection, provide the new full address and access details. Moving from a drive to a workshop may change the transport job even though the registration and SORN status remain the same.

Frequently asked questions about SORN disposal

Does SORN mean the car has no scrap value?

No fixed value follows from its status. Condition, completeness and collection requirements need assessment. Describe missing components and mechanical faults when discussing the offer.

Must I renew SORN while collection is delayed?

GOV.UK says SORN does not need renewal. Continue to comply with the storage requirements while you remain responsible for the car, and notify DVLA when the handover occurs.

Will the sale give me another tax refund?

A refund may already have followed the SORN declaration. Check the tax record and DVLA guidance; do not count a second refund into the offer unless it is actually due. The tax and insurance guide explains the separate follow-up.
