When a car is already at a Portsmouth garage, agreeing to scrap it does not automatically arrange its release. The owner, workshop and quote provider need the same understanding of the vehicle, the collection address and the appointment. Putting that agreement in place avoids a journey to a locked yard or a car that is not ready to leave.
Request a Portsmouth ScrapTrak quote using the garage’s collection postcode. Explain that the car is at a workshop. Call 023 9355 2546 to discuss release or access details before a collection is confirmed.
Give the garage address, not just your home address
The quote must reflect where the car will actually be collected. Provide the workshop’s name, full address and complete Portsmouth postcode, whether it is in Fratton, North End, Hilsea, Cosham or another PO1–PO6 city location. Give an appropriate workshop contact and explain who will authorise release.
Tell the garage you are considering disposal and ask where the vehicle can be made available. A car inside a workshop, in a crowded yard or behind a height barrier may require a different appointment from one on an accessible forecourt. The collection provider needs those facts before confirming arrangements.
Agree release before booking an appointment
Ask the workshop what needs to be agreed before the car can leave. That may include a repair decision, storage arrangements, outstanding work or arrangements for removed components. Resolve any disagreement directly with the garage; the collection provider cannot assume permission to remove the vehicle.
- Confirm that you have decided whether further repair work will proceed.
- Ask the garage to state any release requirements and relevant charges.
- Establish who can hand over the car and whether you need to attend.
- Confirm the keys, available documents and location of detached components.
- Agree an appointment with the quote provider within the garage’s availability.
- Tell both parties promptly if access, condition or timing changes.
A submitted quote request is not a confirmed collection appointment. The garage’s opening hours also do not establish a collection slot. Wait for the arrangements to be agreed by the people involved.
Who needs to agree what?
A smooth garage handover depends on three connected agreements. The owner decides whether to dispose of the car and establishes authority. The workshop confirms its release and access arrangements. The quote provider assesses the vehicle and confirms the proposed collection terms. None of those agreements should be inferred from another party’s availability.
| Party | Useful confirmation |
|---|---|
| Owner or authorised seller | The decision, authority, accurate vehicle details and intended recipient of payment. |
| Garage | Release requirements, present condition, keys, parts, access and a handover contact. |
| Quote provider | Assessed offer, collection scope, appointment and required records. |
Share the contact details needed for the handover with the parties involved and keep a record of the confirmed arrangement. If someone will attend on the owner’s behalf, explain that early and ask what authority is required. A receptionist knowing that a collection is expected is not the same as an authorised person being ready to release the car.
Where a workshop is operating around the vehicle, ask which collection window is practical and whether it can be made accessible beforehand. For a North End or Fratton street-front garage, that may include coordinating other parked vehicles. For a Hilsea yard, it may include a gate contact and clearance inside the premises.
Check what the garage has dismantled
A car may have changed during diagnosis. Ask whether the engine, gearbox, wheels, battery or other components were removed, and whether those parts remain available. If they are included in the disposal, confirm where they will be placed and whether the collection provider has agreed to take them.
Do not use a quote for a complete car if that is no longer its condition. Our incomplete car guide explains the inventory to provide. For the underlying decision, see the engine failure, gearbox failure or MOT failure guide.
Share the loading facts
Ask whether the car currently rolls and steers, whether the brakes are seized and whether it can be placed in neutral. State if the keys are unavailable or a wheel is missing. The garage may know these details better than you, so pass on their description without guessing.
For a yard or industrial unit, identify gates, overhead restrictions, slopes and the practical route to the vehicle. Agree whether someone needs to move other cars first. Our Portsmouth collection guide covers preparation without assuming particular recovery equipment is available.
A short message that prevents missing information
When confirming the arrangement, include the registration, workshop address, contact person, current condition, key location, detached parts and any release requirements. Add the appointment only after it has been agreed. This creates one practical reference instead of separate conversations with different assumptions.
For example, an owner may know the car has an engine fault but not know that the garage removed parts during diagnosis. The workshop may know that it rolls but assume the owner has agreed collection. The quote provider may have a home postcode while the car is actually in Cosham. Resolve those differences before the appointment.
If the appointment or vehicle changes
Tell the garage and quote provider when keys move, another car blocks access, components are removed or the proposed contact becomes unavailable. Confirm any revised terms. If you decide to continue repairs, communicate that decision before a collector travels. A previous quote does not require you to leave unclear arrangements in place.
Use our collection checklist for the items that remain the owner’s responsibility, including belongings and the records to retain. The workshop’s involvement does not automatically deal with everything inside the vehicle.
If you are the garage arranging disposal
Obtain the vehicle owner’s authorisation and establish who is selling the car, receiving payment and completing the notification. Explain your role to the quote provider. Do not offer a customer’s vehicle for disposal merely because it remains on your premises or because a bill is unpaid.
For several vehicles, provide separate registrations, condition details and permissions. Each needs assessment; one car’s offer and collection terms do not automatically cover the others.
Keep the records connected
Confirm the recipient’s details, agreed amount and handover date. Keep the collection record and follow the appropriate DVLA notification route. GOV.UK’s transfer guidance explains the notification process, including the route without a logbook. Read our paperwork guide before release.

Garage collection questions
Can the garage request a quote for me?
It can help supply vehicle and site information, but its role must be explained. Establish who is the seller, who can authorise disposal and who will receive payment. The customer’s authority should not be inferred from the fact that the car is on the premises.
Do I have to be present when the car leaves?
Ask the recipient what attendance, identification and authorisation arrangements it requires. If another person will hand over the car, agree that before booking. Do not assume that leaving documents or keys with a garage is sufficient in every case.
Who pays a repair or storage bill?
Resolve that directly with the workshop as part of the release arrangements. A disposal quote does not settle a separate bill or dispute, and collection should not be booked on an assumption that the vehicle can leave before those arrangements are clear.
Can the car leave with dismantled parts?
List the components and where they are stored, then agree their inclusion and presentation with the quote provider. The collection of the vehicle does not automatically cover loose parts at another location or material unrelated to it.
What should I check after handover?
Reconcile the agreed recipient, date and payment with the records you receive. Follow the DVLA notification guide. If the car is completely scrapped, check the appropriate Certificate of Destruction outcome separately.
