Scrap Car Paperwork Portsmouth

Preparing the paperwork helps you hand over an unwanted car with a clear record of what happened. Before collection in Portsmouth, check the vehicle details, confirm who is receiving it and ask what documents they require. Keep a record of the agreement and complete the DVLA notification after the handover.

Start with a Portsmouth vehicle quote through ScrapTrak, or call 023 9355 2546 if documents are missing or someone is acting on your behalf.

What to have ready

  • The vehicle registration, make and model.
  • The V5C logbook, if available, and the keys.
  • The identification and address evidence requested for the handover.
  • The agreed quote, collection terms and payment details.
  • Evidence of permission to dispose of the vehicle if you are acting for someone else.

Explain any missing documents before booking collection. If the car is subject to finance, belongs to an estate or is held by a garage, resolve the authority to release it first. A car being on your property does not by itself establish permission to scrap it.

Dealers must verify the supplier’s name and address when receiving scrap metal. Ask which documents are acceptable before the appointment; see GOV.UK’s scrap metal dealer guidance. Avoid posting pictures of your logbook or its document reference number publicly, as GOV.UK’s selling guidance advises.

The V5C and notifying DVLA

For a car being scrapped, GOV.UK says to give the ATF the logbook while retaining its yellow motor trade section. Tell DVLA that you have taken the vehicle to an authorised treatment facility. You can be fined £1,000 for failing to notify DVLA.

Confirm the recipient’s full name and address and the handover date. Check that the details entered match the vehicle and the transaction. Retain the DVLA confirmation with your collection receipt and payment record.

If the logbook is missing

Tell us before collection so the documentation requirements can be checked. Do not assume that you need to buy a replacement V5C just to make an enquiry.

DVLA’s online sold-or-transferred service cannot be used without a logbook. Its official instructions say to write with your name and address, the registration, make and model, exact sale date, and the new keeper or motor trader’s name and address. Use the postal address on that GOV.UK page and keep a copy of what you send.

When a Certificate of Destruction applies

End-of-life vehicles must be scrapped at an authorised treatment facility. If a qualifying car is completely scrapped, the ATF must provide a Certificate of Destruction within seven days. A vehicle repaired and sold does not receive one. Check GOV.UK’s explanation, confirm the intended route and keep any certificate issued. A collection receipt is a separate record.

Tax, SORN and your parking arrangements

After you tell DVLA, vehicle tax is cancelled and any refund covers full remaining months. The official tax refund guide explains the calculation. Contact your insurer about the policy separately.

A SORN car must stay off public roads while awaiting collection. Check GOV.UK’s SORN guidance; a permit bay in Portsmouth is not private storage just because you have a parking permit.

Plan the collection as well as the documents

Give the full collection postcode and explain gates, barriers or loading restrictions. Read our guides to Portsmouth collection, non-running cars, MOT failures and scrap car prices.

Official guidance reviewed on 2 October 2026. Check the linked GOV.UK pages for subsequent changes.

Keep five different records connected

An offer confirmation, receipt, payment evidence, DVLA acknowledgement and Certificate of Destruction do different jobs. Keeping them together helps you follow the transaction without mistaking one for proof of everything. Label the records with the registration, actual handover date and receiving business.

RecordWhat it helps establish
Offer and collection confirmationThe vehicle description, amount and arrangements agreed before handover.
Handover receiptWho received the vehicle and when it left your possession.
Payment evidenceThe amount and financial transaction, separately from destruction or notification.
DVLA acknowledgementThe keeper-record notification, using the appropriate transaction.
Certificate of Destruction, when applicableThe qualifying vehicle’s complete scrapping through an ATF.

Choose the paperwork route for your circumstances

With the current V5C available, read the correct DVLA transaction and the instructions on the document. If the logbook is missing, explain that before booking and prepare the details needed for the alternative notification route. The missing-logbook guide covers the replacement decision, while the DVLA notification guide sets out the record and follow-up stages.

Retaining a personalised registration is another sequence. Removing the physical plates does not retain the registration right. Resolve eligibility and obtain the necessary DVLA documents before disposal. Keep the original and replacement registrations connected in your quote and handover notes; the private-plate guide explains the timing.

If an insurer, finance provider, business or estate is involved, describe that accurately before offering the car. Establish who can authorise disposal and which transaction applies. A collector’s arrival cannot resolve a disputed ownership position or another party’s existing arrangements.

Finance agreements and vehicles from an estate

Before agreeing a sale, separate three questions: who owns the vehicle, who can authorise its disposal and what DVLA notification applies. The name on a V5C, possession of the keys and responsibility for repayments do not answer every one of those questions.

Check the agreement before arranging disposal

Hire purchase (HP), personal contract purchase (PCP) and leasing differ from buying with an unsecured personal loan. HP ownership normally passes when the required payments are completed. With PCP, ownership requires completing the purchase, including the final payment. Personal contract hire (PCH) is a hire arrangement. MoneyHelper’s vehicle finance comparison explains these differences.

If a finance or leasing company still owns the vehicle, contact it before accepting a disposal offer. Explain the fault, any insurance claim and the proposed route. Ask what permission, settlement arrangements and written evidence are required, then retain its response. With an unsecured personal loan you ordinarily own the car, but disposal does not cancel the debt. Check your actual agreement, including whether borrowing is secured, and tell the buyer about unresolved ownership restrictions. A scrap quote does not establish finance clearance.

Use the bereavement route where it applies

If the registered keeper has died, establish who is authorised to arrange the transaction and ask the recipient what evidence it requires. Keep that authority check separate from notifying DVLA.

DVLA’s selling a vehicle after bereavement guidance explains the letter to its Sensitive Casework Team, including your relationship to the person who died, the date of death and who should receive any vehicle tax refund. The V5C instructions differ for a private buyer and a motor trader. Without the V5C, follow the separate instructions, including the buyer’s details and sale date. Keep a copy of what you send and the handover records.

Know which business details you need

The trading style, quote service, collecting contact and final treatment facility can have different roles. Ask for the actual receiving business details required for the handover and DVLA process. Do not substitute a brand name or an address found online when the recipient has not been established.

For complete scrapping, check the named treatment route using the official registers linked in our authorised recycling guide. Our destruction certificate guide explains when that document applies and what to do if it is missing.

A handover record for a car at a Portsmouth garage

Connect the owner’s authority, garage release and receiving business details before the appointment. Confirm who has the documents and keys, whether the owner needs to attend and what has been removed during diagnosis. Record the actual collection address even if the owner’s contact address is elsewhere.

On the day, match the registration and agreed description, obtain the promised handover information and keep any changes in writing. Afterwards, follow the appropriate notification route rather than assuming the workshop, collector or quote website has updated every record automatically.

Paperwork questions

Does the V5C settle the right to sell?

It identifies the registered keeper, but the disposal authority still needs to match the actual ownership circumstances. Explain finance, an estate, business ownership or any disagreement before collection is agreed.

Should I send pictures of all my documents with the first quote?

Ask what is required through the agreed verification process. Keep logbook reference numbers and sensitive document details out of public adverts or unrestricted photos. A first enquiry and the completed handover require different information.

Does selling the car cancel every related payment?

Check vehicle tax through the DVLA process and insurance directly with your insurer. Review vehicle-linked parking or other accounts separately where relevant. Use the tax and insurance guide and retain confirmations rather than treating the collection receipt as cancellation of every service.
