Difficult-Access Scrap Car Collection in Portsmouth

A car can be easy to reach on foot and difficult to remove by recovery vehicle. A low car park entrance, narrow passage or another parked car can change the loading plan. For a Portsmouth vehicle in an awkward space, explain the complete route from the public road to the car before a collection appointment is agreed. The aim is to identify a workable approach before anyone arrives.

Request a Portsmouth vehicle quote using the form on our homepage. Continue on ScrapTrak to confirm the vehicle, condition and contact details. For an access or documentation question, call 023 9355 2546. A quote request does not reserve a collection slot.

Describe the route, not just the postcode

Start with the actual PO1–PO6 collection address, then describe where the vehicle sits. If it is behind a block of flats or in a shared garage court, give the entrance location and the bay or garage number. A map pin may help identify the entrance, but it does not establish that a truck can use it.

  • Entrance: gates, bollards, barrier controls and any signed height, width or weight limit.
  • Route: tight corners, low roofs, steep ramps, uneven surfaces and parked vehicles along the approach.
  • Loading position: space around the car, the direction it faces and whether a recovery vehicle could approach it.
  • Exit: whether the vehicle must return through the same restricted entrance or another approved route is available.

Give measurements already available from signs or site records. Do not guess a safe clearance or climb into an unsafe position to measure one. If the dimensions are unknown, say so and let the collection provider decide what assessment is needed.

Car parks, garages and premises with controlled access

For an underground or multi-storey car park, provide the level, bay, entrance limit and site contact. Portsmouth City Council notes that many city car parks have height or weight restrictions; check the official council information and the actual signs at your location. Those restrictions can also matter when arranging recovery.

Ask the managing agent, garage or business who can authorise access and operate barriers. Agree opening hours, security checks and the person who will meet the collector. Permission to enter the premises and authority to sell the car are separate matters; both need to be clear. Resolve any release conditions with a garage before booking.

Permit streets and limited loading space

In Southsea, Fratton, North End or Portsea, say if the car is boxed in by parked vehicles or sits in a permit bay. Give the road, position and known restrictions rather than assuming there will be space on arrival. Check Portsmouth’s parking-zone directory for current local information.

Discuss a lawful loading position with the provider. Do not block a pavement, reserve road space with objects or move an unsafe vehicle into traffic to create access. If site permission or parking arrangements remain unresolved, an appointment may need to wait.

Combine access details with the car’s condition

A narrow driveway and locked steering create a different job from the same driveway with a car that rolls freely. Mention keys, flat tyres, seized brakes, missing wheels and whether neutral can be selected. Read our non-runner guide for condition questions. Collection requires suitable equipment, safe access and agreed terms; this page does not promise that every location can be served.

Keep the collection-day checklist handy once an approach is agreed. For the ordinary booking process, use our Portsmouth collection guide.

Three Portsmouth situations worth describing early

A car between other vehicles on a residential street

If a car in Fratton or North End is parked tightly between others, explain which end is accessible and whether either neighbouring vehicle can be moved by its owner. Say whether your car can roll and steer. A space that was clear when you requested a quote may have changed by collection day, so check the position again and report a change. Do not promise that a public-road space will remain available.

A vehicle below a low entrance

For a Southsea basement or managed car park, separate the entrance restriction from the vehicle’s condition. Give the signed clearance, level, bay and the route through any ramps or turns. Ask the manager whether another approved access route exists and who can attend. Do not assume that opening a barrier removes a fixed height restriction or that a recovery vehicle may enter because ordinary cars use the site.

A non-runner behind a shared entrance

For a garage court or shared drive in Cosham or Drayton, explain who controls the entrance and what else is stored along the route. If another car must move, arrange that with the responsible person. If your vehicle’s keys are missing, use the missing-key guide as well: unlocking a gate does not resolve locked steering or a transmission left in park.

Make an access note the collector can use

Write down the address, entrance, parking position, restrictions and site contact in one place. Add what you know about movement: starts or not, wheels free or not, steering free or locked, and keys available or unavailable. Include any details that remain unknown. Supply that note when discussing the appointment rather than relying on several disconnected messages.

Photographs may help if requested. A useful set shows the entrance, the approach and the space around the car. Take them from a safe, permitted position; avoid including unrelated personal information. A picture can show a tight corner, but the provider still needs to decide whether the route and loading position are suitable.

Questions about an awkward collection

Can the collector move it to a clearer place first?

Explain that need before booking. The initial move is part of the job to assess, including who has permission and whether the vehicle can move safely. Do not assume it is included in the offer or arrange a separate improvised move.

What if the gate contact cannot attend?

Tell the provider before the appointment and agree an alternative authorised contact. A barrier code alone may not satisfy a site’s entry or release requirements. If permission is unresolved, the appointment needs review.

Could difficult access change the amount payable?

Ask whether the offered amount assumes ordinary access and whether any exceptional loading cost applies. Confirm the final terms before release. Our quote comparison guide explains what to record.
