A damaged car may still start while being unsuitable to drive or difficult to load. When arranging removal in Portsmouth, describe the physical damage as well as the engine’s condition. That gives the quote provider the information needed to assess the vehicle, check the proposed disposal route and consider suitable collection arrangements.
Start a Portsmouth damaged car enquiry through ScrapTrak, or call 023 9355 2546 if the damage or location needs explanation. Acceptance and collection depend on individual assessment.
Describe what has changed after the damage
“Front-end damage” or “minor accident” can mean different things to different people. Explain which areas are affected and whether they interfere with movement or access. A clear description is more useful than assigning your own insurance category or estimating repairability from appearance.
- Which end or side of the car was affected, and whether it was involved in an impact, flood or fire.
- Whether a wheel is displaced, missing, jammed or touching the body.
- Whether the steering turns and the car can roll.
- Whether doors, the bonnet and the boot can be opened.
- Any visible fluid leak, broken glass or loose bodywork.
- Whether airbags deployed and whether keys are available.
Provide photographs if the quote team requests them and you can take them safely. Useful views show the damaged area, the whole vehicle and the available loading space. Do not crawl under a damaged car or move unstable parts to obtain pictures.
Separate the condition, the location and the proposed route
These are three different parts of a damaged car enquiry. The damage describes the vehicle. The location describes the collection problem. The route describes whether the proposed transaction is complete scrapping or another assessed outcome. An apparently small area of body damage does not answer all three questions.
| Information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Engine runs but a wheel is displaced | Starting condition does not establish that the car can be driven or loaded normally. |
| Car is in a recovery compound | The premises may need authority, an appointment and release arrangements. |
| Insurer has assessed it | The confirmed category and ownership position need to be established. |
| Parts have been removed | The offer must describe the car as it stands now. |
Do not describe an unknown detail as clear simply to complete the enquiry. Saying that steering movement has not been checked or that you are waiting for the insurer’s decision gives the quote team a useful starting point. They can identify what needs to be established next.
Check the insurance position first
If the damage is part of an insurance claim, speak to the insurer before arranging an independent sale. Establish who controls the vehicle, whether it has been written off and whether you have agreed to retain it. Do not book another collection while the insurer is also arranging removal.
GOV.UK’s write-off guidance explains that categories A and B cannot return to road use. Category S or N vehicles can return only after suitable repair to a roadworthy condition. The category affects the route, but does not establish that this service will accept a particular car. Our salvage assessment guide explains the questions to ask.
Tell us where the damaged car is now
Use the actual collection address and full Portsmouth postcode. If it is at a garage, recovery premises or another person’s property, identify the person who can authorise access and release. Confirm any appointment, storage or release requirements directly with the premises.
At a Southsea or Fratton address, describe tightly parked vehicles, permit bays and whether debris is blocking a safe approach. At a driveway in Cosham, Drayton or Farlington, mention slopes, gates and the width of the entrance. A postcode district such as PO4 or PO6 is not enough to establish access.
Examples of useful collection descriptions
Damage at a home address
For a car on a Drayton driveway, a useful description could say which corner is damaged, whether all wheels are present and whether the driveway slopes. Include the entrance and any parked vehicle that limits access. Avoid phrases such as easy pickup if you have not established how the damaged car can move.
Damage assessed at a garage
For a vehicle at a Fratton garage, ask the workshop to confirm what has changed during inspection. A removed bumper may be with the car, while a disconnected component may affect movement. Agree whether you or the workshop will provide the condition information. Our garage collection guide explains the release arrangements.
A car still at an incident scene
A planned disposal enquiry is different from dealing with an immediate roadside incident. Follow instructions from the emergency services or recovery provider already involved and prioritise the scene’s safety. Once the vehicle is stored and ownership is clear, its actual location and condition can be used for a disposal assessment. Do not schedule competing collections for the same vehicle.
Electric and hybrid damage needs to be disclosed
Tell the quote team if the car is electric or hybrid, especially following impact, fire or flooding. Do not try to inspect or remove high-voltage components. Government electric vehicle recovery guidance identifies additional risks after major damage. Any collection requires a suitable assessment; this page is not a recovery instruction.
Prepare a clear agreement
Check whether the offer is for scrap disposal or another assessed route, what condition it assumes, and the final amount after any agreed collection costs. Disclose any parts removed since the damage. Our incomplete car guide covers that situation.
Remove belongings only where it is safe, gather the available documents and keep the handover record. For the appointment itself, read Portsmouth collection advice and the paperwork guide.

Damaged car collection questions
Does a current MOT mean I can drive the damaged car?
No. A previous pass does not establish that it remains safe after damage. GOV.UK’s roadworthiness guidance makes the driver’s responsibility clear. If there is doubt, seek appropriate professional advice and discuss collection rather than trying to prove the car can travel.
Do I need to know whether it is Category S or N?
Give the confirmed category if an insurer has supplied one. If there is no assessment, describe the physical damage and the claim position instead. Do not choose a category from photographs or use a category to imply that acceptance or repair is guaranteed.
Can I remove belongings from a damaged car?
Only where you can do so safely. Explain inaccessible belongings before handover, particularly where doors are jammed or broken glass is present. Do not cut, force or climb into a damaged vehicle to prepare for an ordinary collection appointment.
What should I compare between two offers?
Compare the same disclosed condition, the intended route, any agreed collection costs and the amount payable. Check what further assessment could change the offer. A headline figure for an intact, freely moving car is not a reliable comparison with an offer that accounts for impact damage.
After handover, keep the agreed recipient, payment and collection records. If the car is completely scrapped, our Certificate of Destruction guide explains the qualifying document and follow-up.
